ABYSS Rules

Let’s design a game called Abyss, a deep-sea adventure and resource management game where players take on the roles of underwater explorers and researchers. They must gather resources, discover sea creatures, and build their own deep-sea empire while avoiding the dangers of the unknown. Here’s the detailed setup, rules, and FAQ for Abyss.

Game Concept: Abyss

Theme:
Abyss takes place in the depths of an unexplored ocean where players compete to become the ultimate underwater explorer. They gather resources, recruit sea creatures, discover lost relics, and build outposts. Players must balance exploration, combat with underwater threats, and strategic resource management to claim victory. The player with the most influence at the end of the game will be declared the ruler of the Abyss.

Components

  1. Game Board:

    • A modular board with hexagonal tiles that represents various oceanic regions like coral reefs, deep trenches, shipwrecks, and sunken cities. The board is created randomly at the start of each game.
  2. Explorer Tokens:

    • Each player has tokens representing their Explorers, which they use to move around the board, gather resources, and combat sea creatures.
  3. Resource Tokens:

    • Oxygen, Energy Crystals, Gold, and Artifacts. These are essential for survival, exploration, and building outposts.
  4. Creature Cards:

    • Cards representing various sea creatures, ranging from helpful allies like dolphins and whales to dangerous predators like sharks and giant squids. Some creatures provide bonuses, while others must be fought.
  5. Outpost Tiles:

    • Players can build Outposts in different regions to gather resources automatically or to defend against threats. Each outpost grants bonuses based on the type of region it's built in.
  6. Discovery Tokens:

    • Hidden under certain tiles, these tokens represent special discoveries like sunken treasure, rare species, or forgotten technologies that grant powerful rewards.
  7. Combat Dice:

    • Used in combat scenarios when fighting hostile creatures or competing against other players for territory.
  8. Action Cards:

    • Cards that give players unique abilities like advanced technology, defensive measures, or offensive tactics to use against opponents.

Objective

The objective of Abyss is to become the most powerful underwater explorer by gathering resources, discovering sea creatures, building outposts, and claiming influence over different oceanic regions. Players earn points by controlling key territories, gathering rare resources, and defeating sea creatures. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Setup

  1. Board Setup:
    • Randomly assemble the modular board by placing hexagonal tiles face-down in a grid pattern. Flip them over one by one to reveal different oceanic regions like Coral Reefs, Shipwrecks, Deep Trenches, and Sunken Cities.
    • Place Discovery Tokens in hidden tiles across the board (shuffle them and place face-down).
  2. Player Setup:
    • Each player chooses a color and takes a set of Explorer Tokens (usually 3-5 per player), along with starting resources (e.g., 3 Oxygen, 2 Energy Crystals, and 1 Gold).
    • Each player also draws 2 Action Cards and 1 Creature Card at the beginning.
  3. Determine First Player:
    • Choose a first player by rolling dice or another method of choice (e.g., who last went swimming).

Gameplay Overview

Abyss is played over a series of turns, where each player takes actions like moving their explorers, gathering resources, discovering new regions, building outposts, and battling sea creatures. The game ends when all discovery tokens have been claimed, a player builds their last outpost, or a preset number of rounds has been completed.

Turn Structure

On each player's turn, they can perform up to three actions in any order:

  1. Move Explorers:

    • Move one or more of your Explorer Tokens to adjacent oceanic regions. Moving costs Oxygen for each hex tile traversed, and some regions may have additional movement penalties (e.g., Deep Trenches cost extra).
  2. Gather Resources:

    • Collect resources from the tile your Explorer Token is on. Resources vary by region:
      • Coral Reefs: Food and small amounts of Gold.
      • Shipwrecks: Artifacts and large amounts of Gold.
      • Deep Trenches: Rare Energy Crystals.
      • Sunken Cities: Powerful Artifacts and extra influence points.
  3. Discover New Regions:

    • If your Explorer Token is on an unexplored tile (face-down), flip the tile over to reveal a new region. If a Discovery Token is on the tile, claim it for a special bonus, such as resources or new technology.
  4. Encounter Sea Creatures:

    • When moving into a region with a sea creature (revealed through exploration), players must resolve an encounter. Players can:
      • Fight the creature by rolling combat dice and comparing results.
      • Negotiate or Tame certain creatures using specific action cards or resources (e.g., taming a dolphin to assist with movement).
  5. Build Outposts:

    • Spend resources to build an outpost on a region you control. Outposts automatically gather resources from that region every turn and provide defense against hostile creatures.
  6. Play Action Cards:

    • Use Action Cards to perform special moves like boosting movement, enhancing combat abilities, or sabotaging an opponent’s outpost.

Combat

Combat occurs when a player’s Explorer encounters a hostile sea creature or another player challenges them for control of a region. Here’s how combat is resolved:

  1. Declare Combat:
    • When moving into a contested region, combat is declared. Both players (or player and creature) roll a number of combat dice.
  2. Roll Dice:
    • Players roll a number of dice equal to their Combat Strength (based on explorer tokens, outposts, and any creature allies). Hostile creatures have a predefined combat strength.
  3. Compare Results:
    • The player with the higher total wins the combat. In the event of a tie, the defender wins. The loser must retreat their explorer or, in the case of a creature, it is defeated, and the player gains Influence Points.
  4. Use Action Cards:
    • Players may use action cards to gain an advantage in combat or negate damage.

Resource Management

Resources are essential for survival and expansion in Abyss. Players must carefully manage their stockpile of Oxygen, Gold, Energy Crystals, and Artifacts to:

  • Keep their explorers alive and moving.
  • Build new outposts.
  • Recruit sea creatures or activate special abilities.

Running out of Oxygen can be dangerous, as players will be forced to retreat their explorers back to a home base.

Outposts

Building outposts allows players to control key regions of the ocean, automatically collect resources from that area, and defend against sea creatures or rival players. Each outpost provides:

  • Automatic Resource Gathering: Collect resources from that region every turn.
  • Combat Bonus: Adds combat strength to battles fought in that region.
  • Influence Points: Outposts grant influence points toward end-game scoring.

End of the Game

The game ends when one of the following conditions is met:

  1. All Discovery Tokens have been claimed.
  2. A player builds their final outpost.
  3. A set number of rounds have been completed.

At the end of the game, players calculate their final score based on:

  • Influence Points from controlling regions (especially rare regions like Sunken Cities and Deep Trenches).
  • Outposts built.
  • Sea Creatures defeated.
  • Artifacts collected.

The player with the most points is declared the ruler of the Abyss.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  1. What happens if I run out of Oxygen?

    • If you run out of Oxygen, your explorers cannot move further until you gather more. If they are on a hostile tile or need to retreat, they must move back to a previously controlled region or base.
  2. Can I tame any sea creature?

    • No, only certain creatures can be tamed (like dolphins or manta rays) with specific action cards or resources. Most hostile creatures must be defeated in combat.
  3. How many Outposts can I build?

    • You are limited to 3-5 outposts depending on the game setup, but each requires resources to build.
  4. Can I fight other players?

    • Yes, you can fight other players for control of regions. Combat between players is resolved similarly to combat with creatures, but players may have access to more powerful abilities through action cards and outposts.
  5. What are Discovery Tokens?

    • Discovery Tokens represent rare finds like treasure, new species, or lost technology. Each token grants a unique bonus or resource when claimed.
  6. How do I win?

    • The player with the most Influence Points at the end of the game wins. Influence Points are earned by controlling regions, building outposts, defeating sea creatures, and collecting artifacts.
  7. Can I move through regions controlled by other players?

    • No, you cannot move through regions controlled by other players unless you challenge them in combat or negotiate access (if allowed by house rules).
  8. What do I do if I lose a combat?

    • If you lose a combat, your explorer must retreat to an adjacent, friendly region. If no friendly region is available, they must return to a base, and you lose your control over that region.

Abyss combines exploration, strategy, and resource management in a thrilling underwater adventure. Players must balance expansion, combat, and survival as they uncover the mysteries of the deep sea and battle for control of the ocean's depths!
